Prism: Essential Supports for Non-Judgment
Prism: Essential Supports for Non-Judgment
Our minds are always judging and always story making. Judgements protect us from harm and guide us towards safety, security, and satisfaction. We make judgements throughout every moment of our day, most of them are unconscious and don’t individually affect the trajectory of our lives. However, all those smaller judgements do come together to serve as a backdrop for who we are, how we feel, and they create the setting for our overall story. When we learn more about how we make these micro decisions (judgments), that understanding serves us when we make macro judgements as well. Meditation, attentive observation, and mindfulness practice help develop this understanding by strengthening skills that support our sensing and awareness.
Reserving judgement or being overly permissive to avoid conflict is not the practice of non-judgement. This is an overuse (abuse) of the skill of non-judgement. Telling yourself that judgement is bad is a judgement. Our minds are powerful, they can convince us of anything. The practice of non-judgement is meant to help us learn to cultivate awareness of phenomena that informs our judgements so that we can make more conscious choices about the stories we decide to be, act upon, and speak to.
